Clean, crisp-flowering Asiatic lily 'Navona' has big, upward-facing, purewhite flowers that open widely on tall stems. Loose clusters of 3-5trumpet-shaped blossoms open to reveal very dark stamens that contrastnicely against the pure white of the petals. Growing up to 90-120cm tall with rigid, leafy stems itperforms best in full sun or part shade and is not particular to soil typebut requires well-drained soils with good moisture. Reliable and easy togrow, plant in spring or autumn in groups of 3 bulbs minimum to ensure astriking display. Cut back leaves and stems when they turn yellow afterflowering has ceased. NOTE: These plants are toxic to cats but not fordogs. PLANTING LILIES: Plant your bulbs in spring or autumn. Loosen thesoil to a depth of 30-37cm. Deep planting is important as it will helpstabilize your lily and potentially eliminate the need for staking. Mix ina 5-10cm layer of compost. Dig a hole about 15cm deep and set the lilieswith the roots facing downwards. Cover the lilies with a layer of soil,press down firmly and water thoroughly. Space your lily bulbs at a distanceof 3 times the bulb's diameter. Lilies grow best in full sun or part shade.They need 6-8 hours of sun per day and like having 'cold feet'. Therefore,it is advisable to shade the lower part of the plant, which will alsoprotect the roots from drying out. Most lilies like rich, acidic to neutralsoils , but some are lime-tolerant or prefer alkaline soils (e.g., Madonnalilies). Well-drained soils and good moisture are crucial for lilies togrow best. Dry soils need to be avoided. If drainage is a problem, plantslightly shallower and mound soil over the bulb. CARING FOR LILIES: In thegrowing season, water freely and apply a high-potash liquid fertilizerevery 2 weeks. Keep moist in winter. Apply a thin layer of compost in thespring as well as a 5 cm layer of mulch to retain moisture and controlweeds. As flowers fade, cut back the stalks to the base of the plant. Afterbloom, divide lilies. LILIES AS CUT FLOWERS: Choose lilies with buds thatare just about to open. Trim the stem making a diagonal cut with a sharpknife. Snip off the stamens to avoid staining your hands or clothes withthe pollen. Make sure no foliage will be underwater when placing in a vase.A good lily arrangement will last 2 or more weeks. Change the water everyfew days and add cut-flower food to the water.
