Dogwood trees are popular spring-blooming, deciduous trees with blossomsthat appear before the foliage, making their floral display especiallystriking. Eddie's White Wonder dogwood (Cornus nuttallii x florida) is aparticularly attractive hybrid variety with profuse white blossoms, adistinctive growth pattern and enhanced disease resistance. In earlyspring, the hybrid produces abundant, striking white 4-inch wide flowerswith especially large, overlapping false petals, or bracts. The tree has amore narrow frame than native types, with branches that arise in a layeredpattern to give the tree a somewhat pyramidal shape. Eddie's White Wonderis also taller than other dogwoods, reaching a height of 20 feet atmaturity with a width of about 15 feet. In the autumn, Eddie's White Wonderprovides additional landscape interest when its leaves turn an attractivereddish color. After flowering, the tree develops orange to red fruitscalled drupes, which are about one half inch in diameter with a spinysurface. These fruits are popular autumn and winter food for manybirds

Eddie's White Wonder thrives in full sun but is also tolerantof light shade, at least for a portion of the day. It prefers awell-drained location where soil is loamy or sandy with abundant organicmatter, and prefers soil with neutral to acidic pH levels. The tree needsaverage amounts of water but also tolerates moist locations; onceestablished, it only requires occasional watering during dry spells. Underoptimal conditions, Eddie's White Wonder dogwoods can grow up to 2 feeteach year until reaching mature size. Pruning Eddie's White Wonder dogwoodmight interfere with its distinctive branching pattern and should onlyinclude removal of dead or crossing branches.
