The Acer palmatum Senkaki also known as Acer palmatum Sango-Kaku (CoralBark Maple) is noted for its showy coral coloured bark and spectacularautumn colour. The delicate 5-lobed leaves open pinkish-yellow, and matureto light green in summer, warm up to a soft yellow in autumn beforefalling. As leaves shed, they expose the bright, coral red bark on youngtwigs and branches, adding a much needed splash of color in the winterlandscape. In spring, the small, reddish flowers are pretty, but not showyand give way to samaras that ripen in late summer to autumn. Planting Guide
Sharp's Pygmy Japanese Maple willgrow to about 1-1.5m tall at maturity, with a spread of the same. A lowcanopy it grows at a slow rate and, under ideal conditions, can be expectedto live for 60 years or more. Does best in full sun to partial shade andprefers average to moist conditions but is not particular to soil pHalthough grows best in rich soils. Grows well in sandy loams. Will benefitfrom being planted in a relatively sheltered location. Thick mulch aroundthe root zone in winter will protect it in exposed locations or coldermicroclimates. Sharp's Pygmy Japanese Maple makes a good choice for outdoorlandscapes, but is also well-suited for outdoor pots and containers.
