can be planted at any time of the year. Prune in the dormant season (Junethrough September) only removing crossing, damaged or diseased branches.Other times of the year Japanese Maples bleed which can weaken thebranches. Japanese Maples rarely need pruning as their natural shape isnormally the most attractive. Once planted, keep the area free ofcompeting weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons. Gentlybrush snow from branches to ensure it does not weigh down the framework andcause damage.Acer palmatum Stella Rossa is a graceful cultivar with weeping branchesbecoming mound-like with age. The delicate, filigree-like leaves unfoldbright-red in spring through summer then becoming dark burgundy beforeturning bright red with orange undertones in autumn. Does best insemi-shade in moist, well-drained soil away from dryingwinds.

Planting Guide
When planting remove all weeds andgrass within a metre of your desired planting hole then dig a square holeas deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide. When plantingJapanese Maples, use ericaceous compost when possible as this encouragesvibrant foliage colour. Using 50% of the original soil and 50% compost, fill in the hole and firm around gently. Make sure not to bank the soil uparound the collar of the tree as this can cause problems. Planting JapaneseMaples in spring or summer: water well and regularly for the first fewmonths. Planting in autumn: only water a little. Keep an eye on young treesand increase watering if there are extended periods of hot or dry weather.Using rain water instead of tap water is more beneficial as it is moreacidic and better for foliage colour.
