PlantingGuide
Growing up to 60-90cm tall with rigid, leafy stems it performsbest in full sun or part shade and is not particular to soil type butrequires well-drained soils with good moisture. Reliable and easy to grow, plant in spring or autumn in groups of 3 bulbs minimum to ensure a strikingdisplay. Cut back leaves and stems when they turn yellow after floweringhas ceased. NOTE: These plants are toxic to cats but not for dogs. PLANTINGLILIES: Plant your bulbs in spring or autumn. Loosen the soil to a depth of30-37cm. Deep planting is important as it will help stabilize your lily andpotentially eliminate the need for staking. Mix in a 5-10cm layer ofcompost. Dig a hole about 15cm deep and set the lilies with the rootsfacing downwards. Cover the lilies with a layer of soil, press down firmlyand water thoroughly. Space your lily bulbs at a distance of 3 times thebulb's diameter. Lilies grow best in full sun or part shade. They need 6-8hours of sun per day and like having 'cold feet'. Therefore, it isadvisable to shade the lower part of the plant, which will also protect theroots from drying out. Most lilies like rich, acidic to neutral soils , butsome are lime-tolerant or prefer alkaline soils (e.g., Madonna lilies).Well-drained soils and good moisture are crucial for lilies to grow best.Dry soils need to be avoided. If drainage is a problem, plant slightlyshallower and mound soil over the bulb. CARING FOR LILIES: In the growingseason, water freely and apply a high-potash liquid fertilizer every 2weeks. Keep moist in winter. Apply a thin layer of compost in the spring aswell as a 5 cm layer of mulch to retain moisture and control weeds. Asflowers fade, cut back the stalks to the base of the plant. After bloom, divide lilies. LILIES AS CUT FLOWERS: Choose lilies with buds that are justabout to open. Trim the stem making a diagonal cut with a sharp knife. Snipoff the stamens to avoid staining your hands or clothes with the pollen.Make sure no foliage will be underwater when placing in a vase. A good lilyarrangement will last 2 or more weeks. Change the water every few days andadd cut-flower food to the water.
